The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee

I’ve just finished reading The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee, and it was one of those books that made me feel really upset when I finished it. I honestly didn’t want it to end. The good news? The sequel comes out September 7th and it can’t come soon enough!

The novel is set in Manhattan in the year 2118. Normally I don’t enjoy reading futuristic style books but McGee only gives glimpses into the advancements of this future world, she doesn’t get too techy or futuristic on you (promise!). The residents of Manhattan live in a thousand floor skyscraper where the elite occupy the higher levels and the lower levels are for the poor. It presents an interesting view of class as McGee focuses in on the highs and lows of upper-storey living and the cant-quite-reach-world for the lower-floor occupants. It is this juxtaposition of lives that makes the characters push boundaries and seek acceptance.

The narration is told from the perspective of five different characters (all from different sections of the tower). You have Avery, the genetically manufactured stunner who resides in the Penthouse. Lela – Avery’s best friend who struggles with addiction. And amongst others, my favourite Rylin, a hard-working, independent girl from the lower-floors. At first the multiple perspectives took a while for me to get used to, I found myself continually flicking back and forth to remember names and traits, but once you’re in, you’re in.

It really is a fascinating, complex, addictive book and I seriously cannot wait until the sequel. It’s hard to fully delve in to the book here as I don’t want to give it away. Do yourself a favour and read it!
