Share the Dignity

A little while ago I came across the charity Share the Dignity after hearing about it on a Mia Freedman podcast. It was really sad to learn about the plight of women who experience domestic violence as well as the many homeless women living in Australia today. It was eye-opening to realise just how much these women go without, even including sanitary items. Share the Dignity was an initiative started to give these women back their dignity. They run various programs where you can get involved – they have raffles where the monies raised will go to purchasing sanitary items and resources for these women, and help them get their lives back on track. They also have collection points where you can drop off sanitary items. Please see their website for more details: https://www.sharethedignity.com.au/

About Share the Dignity:

Early in 2015, an article by Mia Freedman published on Mamamia caught our attention. We were shocked to learn that in Australia many homeless women and women in domestic violence shelters had to face unthinkable indignities during their monthly period. For these vulnerable and at risk women, each month brought a shameful and traumatic experience, suffering indignities such as having to clean themselves in public toilets and use paper towels or newspaper to create makeshift sanitary pads. Reading it from the comfort of our homes, with the knowledge that many Australian women couldn’t take hygiene for granted during menstruation, we knew we couldn’t allow it to continue.

In April and August we hold our #dignitydrive for sanitary items, Collection points around Australia help us in our mission to ensure every woman has dignity when dealing with her monthly period.
In November we hold our #itsinthebag collection providing a gift to a woman in need at Christmas time.
We also hold several events throughout the year starting with our DigniTEA in May,Yoga4Dignity in September and #istandup in October.
Funds and products raised go towards our projects supporting women in need, providing dignity when dealing with their monthly period and funding projects such as our #Pinkbox Dignity Vending Machines, Because We Care and Activities4All pinkbox_1_origraffle-1_orig.gif
